They are best understood when we first consider the primary purpose of bearing maintenance practices – preventing premature bearing failure. For plant managers with large amounts of industrial equipment, the failure of these small parts can have costly knock-on effects. Three maintenance points for industrial pillow block bearings are explained here: handling, installation and relubrication.
The service life of industrial pillow block bearings depends on various influencing factors including lubrication, level of contamination in the bearing environment, misalignment, correct installation and operating conditions such as load, speed, temperature and vibration levels. So, what practical steps can you take to ensure your industrial pillow block bearings stay in good working order?
Bearings are precision parts and should be handled with care. Contaminants, including moisture, dust or dirt, should be avoided as much as possible, as they can cause real problems if they get into the bearing. Proper handling and storage methods will alleviate this to some extent. When a bearing is handled unnecessarily, for example, if its wrap is removed prematurely, it can expose it to corrosion or contamination.
Second, it may be tempting to use whatever tool is available when replacing bearings or removing them for cleaning. To avoid unnecessary damage, dents and wear, consider using tools specifically designed for bearing handling and installation procedures.
The correct method should also be used when installing the bearing, depending on the bearing type and fit type. Applying pressure to the wrong ring during installation can cause damage to the rolling elements. Also, avoid loose or tight fits, bearing seals or poor finish on shafts or housings. Ultimately, if your installation method is clunky, it may reverse the advantages of the cleaning process you did in the first place.
Finally, one of the main causes of bearing failure is lubrication failure. This includes using the incorrect lubricant, as well as using too much or too little. Select the correct lubricant by considering environmental conditions, temperature, speed and load. Bearing experts will be able to advise on suitable lubrication matches and can control bearing lubrication within a few milligrams.
If a dust cover bearing is used, the dust cover will be damaged and cannot be reinstalled. If you use rubber-sealed bearings, they can be reinstalled, but you need to be careful not to damage them or they won’t be effective at keeping dirt out. When in doubt, seek additional resources or assistance from a bearing specialist.
While these three tips provide a good starting point for reducing bearing failure and extending service life, no amount of maintenance can replace the proper bearing selection. It is critical to ensure that your pillow block bearings match the needs of your industrial equipment.
